St. Luke's

The cogeneration plant on the St. Luke's campus of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare will create both electricity and heat for use at Faxton-St. Luke’s and Utica College. It is estimated that this plant will provide all of the power at St. Luke's Hospital, 75% of the power at Utica College, and 50% of the power at St. Luke's nursing home.

The facility is made up of four engines that will run on natural gas, all of which are between 60-80 percent efficient. The excess heat produced by the engines will be captured and either transported to the facilities for heat or to make steam for the hospital.

Cogeneration will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 4,000 tons annually, provide more reliable services for hospital patients and college students, and reduce the demand on the local utility. Given this increased power stability and reliability the two organizations are expected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year as a result, among other benefits.

Avila

Avila, located in Albany, New York, is the Capital Region's newest independent and full service living retirement community and offers a dynamic lifestyle for seniors. The cogeneration plant on site can provide 100% of the required electricity and heat and complete power backup with the main Avila facility.

The plant features two reciprocating natural gas fired engines with efficiencies up to 80% compared with utility electrical generation which operates at 30% efficiency. As a result, Avila will see great monetary savings, reduced greenhouse emissions and a much more stable power supply and reliable services for its valued community.
